First time posting on WSO, and i was hoping to get some advice from you guys. I received an offer from HSBC Strategic Transactions Group, which is pretty much M&A, and one from Macquarie for IBD. I just want to go to whichever place has better dealflow and will give me the most experience/responsibilities. Where do you guys think I should go? If it came down to culture, I'd go to MacQ, but I've heard a lot about their poor bonuses from last year and their weak reputation in the U.S., both of which concern me. HSBC seems to have a steady stream of cross-border transactions. Which do you think is better? Any advice/feedback/thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
HSBC isn't reaaaaaaally IB in the States - do mostly lending and so I think Strategic Transactions is basically financing (I could be sadly mistaken).
Macq - for SA at least - is a really good experience. FT may be a different story (with comp issues), but they have been on some decent deals recently and you will get a pretty good IB experience.
Strategic Transactions at HSBC is their version of an M&A analyst prog for the record. That being said Macq. is a much better option for the mean time (SA wise). However, as always it's actually less important than where you would want to work FT and where you like the people/culture/pay.

Does anybody know if bonuses at Macquarie are on the rise? I figure they really can't get any worse.
i agree with you that their bonuses can't get any worse. The problem with their bonuses is that they have been keeping too much cash in excess of capital requirement. If they can figure out a way to solve it, i don't see a big issue with their bonuses in the future. Plus your role is SA, then Macquarie is a very good choice.
