HELP! - Taking time off for final exam during SA

Incoming SA at BB

Basically with the way my school schedule works, finals end two weeks after the internship starts. I managed to work around most of this, either by dropping classes, begging professors etc. I also  cleared taking a short thirty minute Quiz Final during training week with HR.

However, one of my teachers who told me he was fine with me taking finals early has now let me know I have to take it during finals week. He is very understanding and will let me take it remotely, but it has to be during finals week. This would mean skipping work from 3PM to 6PM during the first non-training week of the internship. I don't think this would go over very well.

What should I do?

1. Drop the class (kind of problematic vis-a-vis graduation status)

2. Talk to HR about this (I already promised them I only had the one final during the first week, so this would make me look bad).

3. Beg the professor and explain that I will get fired (I don't really want to do this as he has already been very accommodating)

4. Stay at work, take the final at my desk, complete it in half the time 60-90 min (viable). Skip HR, just directly explain the situation to my group.

Im not worried HR/my group won't let me take the time off, my biggest concern is losing the return offer, especially in this environment. I know margins are paper thin, and this seems like a very easy way to cut someone (oh yeh that kid skipped half a day during week 1).

Very concerned about the offer, as this is my dream group and therefore I don't want to recruit elsewhere for FT.

If I were you, I’d be honest with the team. Keep it within the team and don’t bother too much with HR. There’s not point in failing the class, it could put you in the same situation in a few months/year.

You’re a student who is asking to be off 2-3 hours (not half a day in IB…) 4 days after joining, it’s fine. At that time you won’t be staff on many deals and you won’t be vital for the team either (no offence but true).

All in all, be honest, try your best to ace your exam in less than 3h and get back to work. Be pro active with the team especially the days before and after so that they forget you were absent 3h.

Just tell your team. No one is going to let a college kid in an internship taking a final exam even waste 2 brain cells giving a shit about it. Just email your manager/group head immediately so you look good and then remind them when you hit the desk and the morning of the exam. Leave HR out of this they don’t give a shit either. Don’t try to disappear and do it in secret because we will certainly notice you being unresponsive/unavailable when we think you’re at the desk. Beyond that no one will care.

Like the unadjusted- only with a little bit extra.
