Hints in emails

Every applicant at one point or another has analyzed too much into what a recruiter says or how he acts. However, there are definitely some clear signs out there. For example, if someone says "good luck in your future endeavors", you probably didn't get it. Similarly with a plain "good luck" or not bothering to hand out business cards.

A good sign might be if they go into "sell mode" and are trying to convince you that you should work there. If they start asking you about random things like sports or your hobbies then that is usually a good sign as well.

However, what about the more subtle sayings such as "best of luck with the process" or "good luck with the process". Do they have any meaning whatsoever? What about asking what area/group you want to be in and trying to sell you their group (say energy over M&A). Does this mean anything or perhaps they are just competitive about their group?

I don't know...I got an email last week that I was sure would result in rejection, then 10 minutes later got a call inviting me to a Super Day. You really can't tell sometimes.

You are trying to read too much into certain small phrases, and failing to recognize that no single interviewer is solely responsible for hiring you (at least when it comes to BBs or other banks with superday processes). Wishing you luck is not generally a sign that you did or didn't make a good impression. Additionally, failing to hand out business cards is by no means a bad sign - often the banker forgot the cards or just didn't think of it.

I will say, however, that being pitched the interviewer's group by the interviewer (in other words selling the good points of their group), is usually a sign that the interviewer does like you as a candidate and thinks you would do well.

I would try to focus more on body language, the ease of back and forth dialogue and overall remaining optimistic and confident. Don't try to analyze every movement, every phrase, every word by the interviewer and just go with it. Stay calm, stay confident and stay optimistic - analyzing every aspect of the interview is only going to drive you nuts and probably cause you to screw up when you otherwise wouldn't. Good luck.

does HR have a lot of say in recruiting? I always thought if you made a good impression with the MD's you have a better chance.

but I've been wondering the same thing, if I should keep in contact with HR instead of with the MD's, how much of a decision HR has in hiring over VP/MDs etc....

 

Basically the way things work at my shop is that we get a list of people who are cleared by HR, and then we give our offers to people on the list. I can't remember a situation where someone on a formal interview schedule did not end up on the approved list, but I guess if you theoretically piss off HR they can screw you in that stage. I believe the purpose of the list is not as much for the superday process, as much as it is to prevent people from getting in through the backdoor, and to make sure everyone goes through the same process. Otherwise, some groups would be apt to just hire alums, family, friends, unpaids and fuck up the whole process.
