Hong Kong

Want to work in HK finance, am currently at HSK 4 level. Hopefully will get to Hsk 6 by the time i apply for jobs. Is this mandarin level good enough for hk IBD? If not what other sectors can I work in in HK that are more lenient on mandarin requirement?

is your mandarin conversationally fluent? If so, I wouldn't be concerned. Usually they will ask you to answer one hirevue question in a asian language (with that being said if you can speak korean or some other language that also works in hk) and most of the time the interviewer would ask you to ask them questions in Chinese (if you said you can speak Chinese)

if you are from Europe or America I would suggest internally lateral to HK after a few years ( completely viable and doesn't require you to speak Chinese at all)

The language requirement is so that you can easily converse with clients in their native language (often Mandarin), both about business and any personal topics. It's up to you to know whether you can have these types of conversations in Mandarin.

Yeah i know, Im trying to get hsk 6 by the time I apply for jobs, i hope its fluent enough to be accepted

Generally, Mandarin is quite important in HK. However, strictness depends on bank/group. I personally am not fluent at all in Mandarin. Nonetheless, I recently got an IBD offer at a BB in HK for a group that serves fewer Mandarin-speaking clients.
