How are bonuses calculated?

Lots of talk on here about bonus sizes and comp at each level. So, how are bonuses specifically calculated for each person involved in a deal? What percent of retainer, fees, etc. is distributed to each of the analyst/associate/vp levels? Is it all arbitrary and based on how much your MD likes you?

Correct. It generally depends on deal flow for your group / bank.

Generally, bonuses at analyst level at expressed in terms of % of salary. Sometimes offer letters have a range but more often it's just a discretionary bonus which gives management an opportunity to adjust depending on the market conditions. Ranking also matters which is a function of work product and office politics.
