How can I be a good intern?
How can one be a good intern? I hear the stories of just bad interns and want to differentiate myself this summer. Any advice?

Double check your work and try to think through what you’re doing. What do I mean by that? For example, If you’re pulling buyers for me, make sure you take the time to look into what each buyer does snd if it makes sense to the overall business. Idk how many time intern mess up simple tasks like that by just pulling a screen off CapIQ and slapping into a spreadsheet. That’s one example but make sure you’re doing the basics 100%. My experience as an intern and now as an analyst is that my favorite interns were ones who did exactly what I ask for, in the exact format I asked for while also clearly highlighting any issues, caveats or important points. Do as you’re told, don’t get cute with formatting and be responsive/thoughtful. When I send a task over, respond to let me know you’re either working on it or going to work on it and when. Communication is key here as well. Realize that you won’t be working on the most important stuff in the world as an intern but those who take great notes on calls, are responsive at all times and are willng to take the shit that analysts dont want to do (we’ve all been there as interns) are the ones that i hold in high regard. I call it being great at the basics.

Stop trying to chat people up, keep your heads down and do your work
Just be responsive and normal. The offer is yours to lose so there is little upside to trying differentiate yourself. Tbh, there is probably more downside to trying hard. You might rub people the wrong way or get in over your head and drop the ball (people will just remember you messing up, not you taking on more work than other interns). I have only heard of interns being cut because they were “off” (they drank too much at an event, they got too comfortable and verged on inappropriate, they forgot they were working in a professional environment, they were consistently MIA).
