How important are sophomore year internships for a summer analyst position?

I’m a sophomore economics major at a non-target school with a 3.8 GPA. I’ve been cold-calling and cold-emailing bankers for the SA 2022 position. A lot of them mentioned that getting an IB internship sophomore year is vital, but the ones I’ve applied to don’t target sophomores. I have been making progress with accounting, finance, and operations intern positions at investment services firms. Would one of those positions be helpful or detrimental in my SA campaign?

Coming from a non-target, I absolutely know that I would not have gotten into IB without my freshman and sophomore summer boutique IB internships, and I can say the same for my friends who needed their PE/GE internships to get the Junior SA offer they wanted. Even more than a sophomore internship, I would say you even need a freshman year internship, especially if you go to a non-target. When I was recruiting, I had my first interview in February of my sophomore year and had another 5 interviews before my internship even started, meaning that the only experience I really had to talk about was what I did during my freshman year. I would say that a sophomore summer internship is absolutely critical, and those who are most prepared have something even before then.
