How many banks to target?
How many banks did you really target (not just apply to)? I've started networking and I've realized it would be almost impossible to create good relationships with people at all of the 40 or so banks I could possibly apply to, not to mention different groups within the banks. I was thinking of focusing on like 10-15 groups to go really hard for, is that a good approach?
How is it impossible? In college you aren’t working FT plus you’re likely online. You should be able to knock out a lot of quality coffee chats and the like. You need to cast a wide net and see what works out.
Agree with the above, you need to cast as wide a net as possible. If you're targeting NY, most programs are generalist. Can't really aim for specific groups until after you sign your offer.
Focus on your top few groups/banks and try to speak to as many people as possible there, but there's no reason you can't have 2-3 phone calls with people at other banks. 10-15 may seem like enough but realistically you will get cut from a lot and it's good to at least have your name floating around at other banks.
target every freaking bank. You don't realize how fast lists can dwindle down cuz of various reasons.
Agree with the above. While it may not be possible to establish connections with each and every bank, it takes about 10 minutes to send in an application. You'll get interviews for banks you haven't networked with, and you won't get interviews you have networked with. I think if you're deciding to send in an application for a bank that you haven't had the chance to establish a connection with (whether that being you never reached out or they never responded...), it's always better to at least send in an application.
ALL the banks
Agreed w/ all the above. Received 21 SA offer in September and its so important to keep an open mind and cast a wide net. No bank is above you, and no bank is below you. Banks that I thought I had great relationships at fell through, and some banks that I feel I didn't have great connects/were out of reach I went deep. Recruiting is so chaotic and unpredictable you need to just shoot your shot absolutely anywhere you can
You’re gonna be recruiting in a tough job market. Every BB & EB should be on your list and also search for MMs in your location. Be open to opportunities, this is not like college applications where you apply to 10 places and sit on your ass.
As many banks as you can physically handle alongside school work.
It's really a game of how much you want it, so apply to as many as you can.
Best of luck!
