How many drinks is acceptable at a work event?
Obviously there’s nuance here depending on who’s at the event and where you are in your career blah blah blah
But speaking generally, your superiors are there, no clients.
Bad look for an analyst or associate to get buzzed/tipsy? What about a VP?
It’s totally context dependent. There are teams where it’s a badge of honor to be drunk with colleagues and others where it’s just not acceptable, err on the side of caution until you know and look to the most respected juniors for cues.
Depends on whether you can keep it together, buzzed/tipsy mean different things to different people lol
Aim for a special meeting with HR
When I was in banking probably overdid it a little here and there but ended up being fine in my team. Have also seen some of my MDs/Directors get pretty plastered. In my view one of the better sides of banking, as it builds team spirit. Imagine grinding in banking without getting a few pints from time to time…
I changed over time though (started pretty young in banking) and on buyside this definitely does not fly.
Drunk enough that a senior MD drives you home
My rule of thumb is 1 drink per hour if I haven’t eaten in several hours, can have 2 in per hour if I have eaten. This is good buzz/good mood territory for me. Going to have some laughs, but not say anything career limiting.
2-3 max
