How much do you tip your MD for the holidays
After lateraling to a new elite boutique in a high cost of living city (nyc / la / sf) I was curious what is the standard tip for an investment banking MD
For context I’m a 2nd year analyst on an elite coverage team at an elite boutique
At my old bank (a mid tier bb) the standard MD tip was ~2% of bonus - but since I’m now at elite boutique is it closer to 5% of bonus
Also was curious what is the md tipping culture like in Europe and asia
Personally going to be giving my MD my entire tip this year
This may be controversial but as I believe in a meritocracy, I tend to tip on a per-deal basis. Usually $5k / closed deal.
Got it so if you close 5 deals 25k for your md? That seams light? Are u based in the uk?
This methodology only works in groups with a more collegial and tight-knit culture where the MDs foster a healthy sense of competition with one another. On the other hand, I’ve seen underperforming MDs retaliate during reviews against strong analysts who used this approach.
I have heard that some Canadian banks encourage larger tips to underperforming mds to show them appreciation for their efforts
5% is in line with A2s at my EB this year, although you should ask what the other analysts in your class are tipping. As a recent lateral hire, you don’t want to risk coming across as less appreciative than everyone else on the team.

This can’t be real right? Yall are tipping your MDs?? Craziest thing I’ve ever heard. Your MD is not providing you a service. You are providing them a service, off of which they are making millions. Craziness.
My brother - ib analysts have to show the love to their MDs for bringing in deal flow and all the slide decks they screw up

I usually give my entire bonus to my MD. I’m based in NY so the tipping culture here is getting a bit out of hand
