How to get on HR/Headhunter radars?

Hey everyone, I’m a 2nd-year at a UK semi-target, and I was wondering how to get noticed by headhunters and HR. I’ve been hearing a lot about people getting hit up by recruiters and HR for events and internships at smaller firms, and some of these people don’t even go to target schools.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some strategies to get noticed by headhunters and HR, especially if you're from a semi-target or non-target school:

  1. Networking:

    • Alumni Connections: Start by reaching out to alumni from your school who are working in the industry. They can provide valuable insights and potentially refer you to recruiters.
    • LinkedIn and WSO: Use LinkedIn to connect with professionals and alumni. Follow their career paths and try to emulate their steps. Wall Street Oasis (WSO) is also a great platform to stay updated on industry news and trends, which can be useful during networking calls.
  2. Attend Events:

    • Target School Events: Even if your school is not a target, attend events at target schools. Many firms hold informational sessions that are open to students from other schools. This is a good opportunity to meet recruiters and make a positive impression.
    • Finance Professional Events: Put yourself in situations where you might meet bankers and recruiters, such as networking events for finance professionals or even social settings like NYC bars.
  3. Direct Outreach:

    • Emailing VPs and Analysts: Sometimes, regional offices and specific groups run recruiting outside of HR. Directly emailing a VP or an analyst can get you included in their process. Be concise and clear about your interest and qualifications.
    • Structured Approach: Use a spreadsheet to keep track of your contacts and banks. Note the likelihood of each contact helping you and follow up regularly.
  4. Preparation:

    • Technical Skills: Start preparing for technical interviews early. This will make you more confident and ready when opportunities arise.
    • Resume and Cover Letters: Make sure your resume and cover letters are outstanding. Highlight relevant experiences and skills that make you a good fit for the roles you are targeting.
  5. Persistence:

    • Follow-Up: Be persistent in your follow-ups. Sending multiple emails and staying in touch shows your genuine interest and dedication.
    • Be Proactive: Take the initiative to learn about different firms and stay updated on industry news. This will help you have meaningful conversations during networking and interviews.

By implementing these strategies, you can increase your chances of getting noticed by headhunters and HR, even if you are from a semi-target or non-target school. Good luck!
