How to get quicker as an analyst 1

Basically the title. I’m a first year and I’m still pretty much a liability for anything page creates or stuff that isn’t shelled clearly. How do I get better and quicker I feel like I spend every waking second working and it’s still not fast enough.

To get quicker as an analyst, focus on building efficiency through structured habits and tools. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are actionable tips:

  1. Master Keyboard Shortcuts:

    • Learn one Excel shortcut a day and practice it until it becomes second nature.
    • Use macros like those from "Training the Street" to save time on repetitive tasks.
  2. Anticipate Tasks:

    • If you've done a process 2-3 times, anticipate the steps and start working on them without waiting for instructions. For example, if a new deal mandate comes in, proactively handle background checks, money laundering checks, and email distribution lists.
  3. Refine Workflow:

    • Time your core tasks and identify areas for automation or improvement. Small process tweaks can save hours over time.
    • Create Outlook rules to filter out unnecessary emails and focus on critical threads.
  4. Be Methodical and Perfect:

    • Avoid mistakes at all costs. Even small errors can erode trust and slow you down in the long run. Double-check your work, and use tools like F7 for spell-checking.
    • Print out comments/requests, highlight them, and check them off as you complete them to ensure nothing is missed.
  5. Learn to Skim and Prioritize:

    • Develop the ability to skim through materials and identify key points quickly. This is especially useful for research-heavy tasks.
    • Push off non-urgent tasks to focus on high-priority deliverables.
  6. Seek Guidance Efficiently:

    • Don’t hesitate to ask questions, but make them efficient and avoid repeating the same ones.
    • Schedule quick check-ins with seniors to ensure you're on the right track before investing too much time in a task.
  7. Leverage Internal Expertise:

    • Network internally to find subject matter experts (e.g., the "Excel Wizard" or "Slide God") who can guide you on tools or processes you're unfamiliar with. A 15-30 minute chat can save hours of frustration.
  8. Practice and Repetition:

    • Over time, tasks like formatting adjustments and creating slides will become second nature. The more you practice, the faster and more accurate you'll become.

Remember, speed comes with experience, but building a strong foundation of accuracy and efficiency will set you up for long-term success. Keep pushing, and you'll notice significant improvements over time!
