How to make it to IB from my difficult experience
Journey:
1) I come from a poor family, an immigrant, south asain background ( my parents make 40k-45k yearly).
2) I live in a one-bedroom apartment with my parents and sibling and have lived in a small basement in the past shortly after immigrating.
3) I grew up and went to a HS in a high crime area, so most of my life I was focused on sports resulting in me having an average/below average grade. (1200 SAT).
4) I knew i wanted to study business, why? I knew that is the way to become rich. Was very fortunate enough to get into a known non-target (every year 10/400 kids in the class get some sort of IB job, ranked above 60+ in US news ranking) full scholarship.
5) Had a culture shock, was surrounded by rich white kids while I'm there, still living at home, and had a bad environment especially how unsupportive and disrespectful my parents were as I decided to not pursue the Medical field - in a result freshman year 2.4 GPA.
6) Stumbled upon IB through a club, and realized it was my ticket out of poverty. There met a mentor who grew up in the same area as me and was provided with the blueprint.
Junior Year and recruiting
7) Got my GPA above 3.0 still not the best, but got it up, and polished my resume and pretty much the work began
8) Networked my ass off, sent cold emails to analyst all the way to MD, had analyst tell me i my resume was shit, people told me to stop emailing them, I kept on trying and trying. This was also during peak of Covid, and I gained 20-30pounds (I love to work out and keep in shape), so In terms of networking learning my technicals, and interview prep. I went hard as I was tired of being poor.
9) Being a introvert everything the recruiting experience was a nightmare, I had times where it was hard for me to connect with people because of my background or make convo because i didn't know how to talk, but eventually, through hundreds of calls I was able to grow this skillset
10) Landed an offer at MS/GS/JPM at a top group, and got my return
Things I learned from my experience:
Network continuously with people you know and don't know
If you aren't in a position of privilege you have to or try to be a hardo
If you want something you will go out of your comfort zone and be obsessive about it until you get what you want.
Always be prepared, go out of your way to learn things use your time wisely
and most importantly just work hard
- I grew up in a shitty environment and made it work, I learned things along the way and I still have things to learn about when it comes to EQ. Even if one doesn't make it through the recruiting process, if that person recruited/tried hard they will see themselves grow as a person whether its their intellect or their social skills
---- There's a lot of things I didn't go into ( i didn't want to write a essay lol)
