How to survive when you have excessive daytime sleepyness.
Hello monkeys,
I recently started an IB job. Problem is I have excessive daytime sleepiness. I take adderral for my add and drink coffee in the morning. The problem is by midday to evening I feel completely out of it. I am very sluggish, have a lot of brain fog, and can't get the energy to get work done. I am worried I won't last in banking for long and it sucks because I wanted to be here but for whatever reason I can't stay alert. It's come to a point where I make excessive careless mistakes. I was wondering if anyone's gone through this and has any advice to share. It would be much appreciated.
The problem is you said your only taking coffee in the morning.
Your in investment banking, up the caffeine game. Get a venti double shot espresso in the morning. Make that a double in the afternoon.
Can chat up cute girls at Starbucks too. When they ask for your name when you order your venti double shot, say your name is "rain, maker" , then proceed to whip out your Phone and act like your about to close a big deal.
The other thing that can work is cold showers.
Try getting more sleep as well.
Changing your diet might help as well (intermittent fasting?), or just don't eat at all, especially if your bank doesn't pay for it.
I am getting good sleep in my opinion ~ around 7 hours. I just don't know why my body is reacting like this. When I drink too much coffee my anxiety becomes much higher.
You just started. Your body will adapt. It gets easier.
how many mgs of caffeine a day is good?
like 400-800mg?
I generally have ~3 cups of coffee from 9am-3pm which keeps me going all day and allows me to actually sleep at night (you might not be getting quality sleep). Any more caffeine screws with my anxiety as well, but everyone's different. I'm also in school+interning part time so not sure how relevant that is for you, but it has worked when I'm hungover, so I believe in the method.
If you're truly getting 7 hours then you're getting enough sleep so that's not your issue. Does the addy affect your quality of sleep? I used to take it to study for exams and it definitely affected mine. That said, I'm sensitive to caffeine.
It sounds counterintuitive but you'll actually have more energy if you find ~30min/day to do some sort of exercise. It may not be the best to do this on addy (bad for heart? idk). You'll be more tired for the first 1-2 weeks, and then you'll have drastically more energy. You're body will also be way more healthy. Some people like to do this in the morning to make sure it always gets done, others like to do it in afternoon/evening to break up their day (it could get interrupted/pushed if something comes up though).
I'd caution against the afternoon coffee if possible. Obviously it's unavoidable some days, but depending on your genetics it could really disrupt your sleep cycle which would end up making you even more tired in the long run. In fact, since you said coffee increases your anxiety I'd limit it to your minimum required (hopefully just one cup on a normal day).
Make sure you're pounding water, crazy how much this helps. Also, make sure you're eating healthy. No processed food/sugar. Maybe try to limit carbs? I feel sluggish after eating a high carb meal. Limiting carbs or adjusting other macros will depend on your genetics, there's no one size fits all. You should try and find optimal macro breakdown for your body though. It will help drastically with energy, health, aesthetics, etc. You need to find something that's sustainable for you longterm though.
Get up and stretch or something for ~5 minutes every hour. Try going on a walk outside for ~10 min in the afternoon and in the evenings. It will really refresh your brain. Also- like PaintingDry mentioned, maybe you'll run into a cute girl while you're out.
Yeah I'll def start implementing a healthy diet. Get more greens and meats with less carbs. I feel so lazy but I'll try to make an effort to go for a jog every morning now that the weather is getting better. And lol I'm in the suburbs so can't really meet random people when i go on a walk.
This is the post of the year.
Banks instead of promoting pelotons, they need to tell us to get more sleep!
are you iron deficient
Not really. I had my blood test a few months ago.
Hey I’m not sure what your diet looks like, but I’d also pay attention to your daily carb intake (especially breakfast and lunch). High carb diets are typically associated with blood sugar spikes, which can lead to tiredness after your blood sugar falls back down.
Working in IB, I guess you might be eating easy-to-make foods like cereal, sandwiches and pasta. That stuff fills you up quick which helps you get back to work faster, but don’t be surprised if you suddenly feel drowsy in the afternoon.
Anyways, this might just be one of a couple factors leading to your midday sleepiness, but thought you should at least check it out.
Def. I appreciate the advice. I'll start eating more meats and veggies with minimal carbs.
OP you may have sleep apnea. Checkout an ENT to see if you have nasal or breathing obstructions. Surgery can be costly and it may mean you will be out of work for a few weeks, but it can change the course of your life if you actually have severe sleep apnea.
Whenever I read posts like these, a sizeable chunk of the people are just getting terrible sleep which contributes to the exhaustion.
Nasal obstruction is a medical issue, it should be covered by insurance. Had a nose job myself for both functional and appearance reasons. I was feeling fine by day 3 post op
I was going to ask this as well. Had sleep apnea and then got diagnosed and got a machine; but difference. If you’re waking up tired it’s something going on with the rest you’re getting. Also how’s your weight?
You’re taking amphetamines every morning and wondering why you crash midday...?
Check for sleep apnea, may need a cpap machine
Go to a sleep doctor. It could be sleep apnea or narcolepsy. It could be a medical issue, please take seriously.
Hydration. No carb lunch. Coffee & tea.
