How’s your mobility internal transfer experience look like at BBB?
In my current institution, we have an odd policy - if you want to transfer positions internally, you can apply but you can’t have the second interview until you notified your current manager about the intent of moving. The most ideal situation is of course that you go through all the interviews and have an offer on hand and then tell your manager about the event.
But like said, the policy have you let the manager know before proceeding anything. With that being said, tons of folks in the institution still pull off their internal transfer, has anyone had the similar experience? To tell my manager about the intent of moving before I had an offer is the last thing I want to do (doubt I would do it either.)
Has anyone had the similar experience?
I have experience at two banks, both non-BB’s, but massive balance sheet banks (one American, one Euro). At the American, I was required to notify my manager before applying. The first question when you hit apply on the internal jobs post was a yes/no if my manager was aware I was applying. At the Euro bank I’m not aware of any policy, but we’ve been advised we have to let our managers know we want to apply elsewhere, but they are not allowed to discourage us from applying. The prospective team you are applying to will most certainly reach out to your current manager.
Honestly, not notifying my manager I’ve applied internally, seems really weird. Maybe that’s normal? Just sharing my experience
Thanks for sharing!
In your experience, the prospective manager CAN directly reach out to the current manager about the applicant’s candidacy? I thought there will be a standard procedure or questionnaire sth instead of the prospective manager directly launching a discussion with the current one and asking whatever questions they want.
I mean, it’s all circumstantial. Would depend on their relationship, but I would count on the prospective manager most likely reaching out to your current manager regardless of their relationship and how well they know each other. Ultimately your manager determines your performance and will be the best gauge of how you are as an employee (now how right or wrong this is, depends. My MD has said he is supportive)
Makes sense, thanks. The idea of prospective manager reaching out directly to the current manager for further information is a bit odd tbh, given there is a performance record they can refer to. But it still makes sense tho given its internal, and it will be too convenient to not to.
