Huge dilemma in my career

Hi guys,

I started my summer as an operation summer analyst at BLK, top Asset Management firm and I did a fantastic job and people there loved me so much. Before getting into the firm, I did not know what was operation, back office, front office. The title BLK totally enticed me and I realized the operation work is too mundane.

I actually had an offer as a fixed income product strategy, however one of the MDs in operation just intercepted me to operation. So, during this internship, I reached out to fixed income team members and was able to talk about the division transfer. However, the fixed income turned out to be one of the worst teams in the firm and people at fixed income team did not give a shit about new grads.

Even though, I tried so hard to network with people in the fixed income, I did not choose to take the projects of fixed income team and did the operation internship (I had to finish some fixed income projects to qualify myself).

Now, my manager in operation just asks me very straightforward questions like "What is your intention of transferring division and not even trying out?" and "Do you even want to work at BlackRock?". Obviously, I am just a junior who don't know shit about what I am good at or what I really like. However, people tell me I am more kind of Sales type of person and I am pretty interested in sales too. I had a small project within operation to work as a sales to explain the service to customers and that experience was thrilling, giving me some dynamism to my internship that I never felt before.

So, people around me tell me two types of advice. First, I can stay in operations for 2~3 years then to move to sales within BlackRock through internal mobility. BLK has a great internal mobility opportunity, so I think this is a very feasible plan. But, I have to stay in operations for 2~3 years.

Second, I can just go look for another sales position of finance during my senior year. It will be tough, but might be able to start my career directly as a sales person. High risk, high return.

Please enlighten me with your previous experiences and any sort of advice, such as I should go talk to sales team of BLK. Thank you guys.
