I just took a "practice" GMAT, comments on my score please?
As most of you know I'm a freshman in college still and barely 18. I just took a shortened version of the GMAT and received an 84% which is roughly a 672. Is this any indication of how well I could possibly do on the GMAT? I know when I took the SAT's in grade 6 and did exceptionally well for my age the stat sheet said what my approximate SAT will be when I'm an 11th grader. So is this score an indication of how well I could possibly do?
If you're scoring 672 now you'll make it in the 700's easy, provided the 672 was secured w/out preparation.
But seriously, chill out dude. GMAT's first year of college? I mean its good to be ambitious but during the next 3 years you'll find plenty of bigger fish to fry. Don't over-encumber yourself too much, and enjoy life.
You know this is an IB board right? I mean, seriously, who else but overly-ambitious/IB-focused/IB-centered people would be on here? The "don't over-encumber yourself" speech is going to be wasted on the people here during a Friday night...
the GMAT is basically the SAT for big kids - i wouldn't worry too much about it or i-banking if you're still a freshman. i agree with heliotropic - chill out and enjoy college. you don't really need to be serious about anything for at least 2 more years.
If you are a freshman at a non-target, you definitely should start to worry about banking your freshman year. I don't know if you go to a non-target or not, but you can't wait until 2 years later to be serious about these sorta things. The earlier you start, the better shot you have at getting in.
If you really want something, you don't just wait for it to fall into your lap, you have to go out and get it. And taking the GMAT, looking at transfer apps, getting any internship as a freshman, are strong first steps.
I don't worry, I'm not over worrying. I'm just bored out of my mind because I'm on spring break but everyone I know isn't so I just did it to pass the time. There was no preparation either.
PS: I'm also struggling with my transfer application to Penn if anyone's bored and wants to help. I'm doing this because I go to a non-target and ambition doesn't mean shit when the company won't even get your resume.
PPS: This is a boring Friday night so I'm making the best of it. But I'm definitely going to see 300 tomorrow. I'll gladly share my opinion of it with the forum tomorrow.
I go to Pitt, definite non-target. Trying to do my Penn app. and it's confusing! Struggling to find any sort of internship too :-/ Any help on either would be appreciated.
I'm not the best person to take advice from, since I'm not in the industry or have that much experience with recruiting, in terms of general internship search-type advice, I would say this: You are a freshman, and you have to a long and hard look at what you have to offer to any potential employer. Unfortunately, what you find is that as a freshman, you don't possess much in terms of skill or experience. Your best, and possibly only, selling point, is that you are desperate and motivated, aka cheap labor.
So, my advice would be to look for opportunities that fit within the realm of what you have to offer. It might be something on campus: research assistant for a professor, a PM for the endowment, etc, that wouldn't mind getting a student laborer during the summer. Or you could look at smaller businesses in the area that could use free labor, any finance-related business would be fair game (I'm sure you can find something in Pittsburg through Google, the regional broker sticky, or school connections). Basically, if the business can use free labor, and you are motivated enough to seek them out and offer to do any scut work that needs to be done, that's half a foot in the door.
Obv, this isn't going to be the best work in the world, but your goal isn't to knock it outta the park, just putting yourself in the position to sell this experience to something better the next summer, and repeat again for BBs.
My EC stuff is a bit "extraordinary" so putting myself in a cheap labor position is a last resort. I've stated I'm an executive administrator and financial adviser of a clothing company and currently intern at a to p10 hospital. I just happen to go to a non-target schools because I didn't treat HS anywhere close to seriously.
Yury,
You are a freshman. You should not be spending your time taking practice GMATs your freshman year of college. Go out and have fun, join clubs and activities, meet girls, etc. doing these kinds of things help you build skills that form your personality and confidence and will do much more for you in the future as opposed to taking practice GMATs already
I know, I just did it out of pure boredom. Plus I'm so worried about getting into Penn that I can't focus on much.
The thing you have to ask yourself, is that sure, you're current ECs are "great" in your view, but are they great for banking? I don't know if you have done any informational interviews, or can do any, but that's the kinda thing you need to do. You can get opinions from the board, but it won't help you that much.
I'm sure you'll figure out a way to make your current stuff relevant to banking, but you need to make sure that what you're doing now can lead to the next step. A good exercise that I did, is work backwards from where you want to be to where you are now. So, I chose my goal for a full-time job, and worked backwards to what I needed to do the summer before that to get the FT job, what I needed to do to get the summer job, and all way back to where I was currently at. Granted, things are going to happen exactly the way you plan it, but it gives you a goal and target that is very tangible.
thx for that tip xistguru. i know what I need to do, just don't know where or how to do it (ie. getting a summer internship)
Your a fucking dumb fucktard. Anything below 700 with no prep is boarderline retarded. I'm convinced you can't even tie your shoes. Please go to the nearest adult and tell them your a big fucking retard.
You take practice GMATs when you're bored? Wth are you doing?
