IB versus Relationship Management

I’m currently deciding between two offers that I have, one is IB with a MM (think Jefferies/HL/Nomura), one is Relationship Management at a MF (think BX/BlackStone/Vanguard). Both are in NYC.

I intially thought I wanted the latter badly since it suits my personality/goals better, but in the last couple of days, I found myself leaning towards IB bc it opens up so many doors. I understand the two paths are inherently different and it largely depends on my goals, but I do want to hear your take on the trajectory/ comp/ hours/ exit opps for each.

Thanks so much!

It’s like you said. Depends on your goals. I know RMs that love their jobs as it is a relationship building job and you get to know a lot of client a lot more intimately than on the IB side in most cases. IB is more one and done transactions but you of course need to build a network so you can bring business to the bank. RM exit options are that crazy though. Only jumps I’ve seen them take is to S&T as sales guys. IB I would say opens way more doors but is alot more demanding but pays off in comp and the amount of transaction you’ll see because as an RM the transactions you’ll see are limited to how many clients you cover.
