Immediate start

Hey Monkeys,

I had a superday with a boutique investment bank for a full-time analyst position before Christmas. Thought the interview go pretty well but they expected candidates to start immediately and I won't be able to start until approx. one month later their indicated start date. One of the partners said during interview "Given your credentials you are more than qualified to do this job" but also added "we would hire someone sooner rather than later". Yesterday I got a reply to my follow-up email saying they are moving forward with other candidates. Wasn't surprised but still disappointed. I am just curious, can timing be a key factor that leads to my rej? Or I was simply not interviewing that good. They asked simple technicals during interview so I think it can't be technicals. Expecting some insights here so that I can perform better next time. Thank you all!

Could be a number of things

(1) These jobs are highly competitive the other candidates are just as qualified as you (if not more so)

(2) Timing is a factor for everything in life from business, to love and everything in between. Based on the information you posted I'd say it definitely played a part.

(3) Off-cycle hires are mostly fit in my experience, you need someone who can get up to speed quickly and be a smooth transition, a number of things can put one candidate over the top.

-One time when we were hiring, there was a candidate who worked across the street and would be an easy move while the other candidates would be moving several thousand miles it was a factor.

-Another time we had a tabbed a candidate during regular recruiting but didn't have enough spots. When a spot opened off cycle we interviewed other candidates but everyone in the decision room knew the tabbed candidate was getting the job.

Bottomline unless you have a personal relationship with the hiring team you'll most likely never know why you didn't get the job. Realize that it's a numbers game and that eventually, you should land a position.

This is finance, you've always got to be thinking about RISK and RETURN. It could be beneficial for you to say that and also detrimental.

One thing that could change this is where your looking to apply, ie if its a regional bank/ boutique probably better.
