Imperial MSc F&A or RSM Finance and Investments

Dear Monkies,

I currently am accepted for both programs. Going to London would have been a dream come true. Though the hefty price tag of 51K, which would have to be nearly fully loaned leaves me questioning.

I really wish to break into Leveraged Finance.

Regards,

Joris

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider:

  1. Imperial MSc Finance & Accounting:

    • Imperial has a strong reputation in London and is considered prestigious for finance roles, particularly in investment banking and related fields.
    • The program is known for its practical approach, career-focused modules, and strong placement in top firms like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and others.
    • However, the £51K price tag is significant, and taking on a large loan could be a financial burden, especially if you're uncertain about immediate returns.
  2. RSM Finance and Investments:

    • RSM is a solid program, especially for Dutch students, given its affordability (€2K) and strong local reputation.
    • While RSM may not have the same brand recognition in London as Imperial, your Dutch background and language skills could give you an edge in roles like Leveraged Finance, particularly with firms that value regional expertise.
    • Placement into London roles from RSM is possible but may require more networking and effort compared to Imperial.
  3. Career Goals and Leveraged Finance:

    • If breaking into Leveraged Finance in London is your primary goal, Imperial's brand name and alumni network could provide a stronger platform.
    • However, your prior internships in Debt and Structured Finance and M&A at a boutique already demonstrate relevant experience, which could help you stand out regardless of the program.
  4. Long-Term Perspective:

    • Over the long term, the Imperial brand may carry more weight internationally, especially if you plan to work outside the Netherlands or in global financial hubs.
    • If you plan to stay in the Netherlands or nearby regions, RSM's cost-effectiveness and local reputation might make it a more practical choice.

Recommendation: If you can manage the financial burden and are committed to leveraging Imperial's network and resources to secure a top-tier role in London, the investment could be worth it. However, if the loan feels too risky or burdensome, RSM is a strong alternative, especially given your existing experience and Dutch background.
