Incoming Analyst Referral Situation

I'm an incoming analyst at a MM bank, think HL/WB/HW and I am currently navigating a situation that I would like some advice on. I recently finished my internship at one of the above banks and was lucky enough to receive a return offer.

During my internship, I reached out to a high-school alumni of mine who owns a company in the same niche sector I covered to see if I could learn more about what it takes to run a business in the space and to briefly introduce the idea of them meeting with my firm/group. The call went well and they seemed receptive to the idea of eventually meeting with them to learn more about the sector and what the bankers are seeing.

Since this call it's been about a month and a half and I have returned to college to finish out my senior year. However, on friday, the alumni asked if I could facilitate an intro to someone on the team because they are thinking about divesting an asset (potentially in the high 8 figure valuation range) and would like to explore a conversation with my bank.

The bank had one business development meeting with the previous CEO 3 years ago but nothing has happened since. I was close to one of the VPs on this team who I will be sending the email but would this count as a referral if this led to a mandate? I do think there is a chance that this leads to a mandate so I want to protect myself to get the referral fee but how would this work given I am technically not yet employed by the firm.

What would you advise me to do in a situation like this? I don't want to overstep but I also don't want to get screwed out of what could be a big payday for an A1. Thanks!
