Kind of snobby for him to say that, but if he's an analyst he may not feel comfortable connecting people just yet. Wouldn't read too much into it.
^This, I would build connections with some analysts but every time I asked to refer to someone they would like sorta dodge that question making me think they're not comfortable doing so.

It's pretty hard for a call to go wrong. Just keep in touch with him, and don't expect any further connections from him I guess. He may still be helpful come application time.

He probably asked himself the question that I'd politely suggest you ask yourself: What good does it do anyone for you to have the same conversation about the same deal, but with a different person? (Answer: none). You're not going to learn anything new, but you're going to use up this banker's and another banker's time.
