Internal Networking Advice?

Hey everyone, this summer will be my first IB job and I want to get the most of it. I want to get to know/network with people in my group, and also the other groups at the firm to see what I like and keep options open for full time.

Obviously grabbing a coffee with someone at the same firm as you will be a different vibe than when I was networking to get an interview/understand what IB is. I don't want to be too overbearing with work talk, but I also don't want to seem like a waste of time to talk to. Would love to hear from on what makes an enjoyable experience from the full time perspective or any times from your time as intern.

Navigating internal networking in your first IB job is crucial for building a successful career within the firm. Here are some tips to make the most out of your networking efforts this summer:

  1. Be Genuine: Show genuine interest in the people you meet. Ask about their career path, experiences, and advice they have for someone just starting. People are usually more open and willing to share when they see genuine interest.

  2. Offer Value: Even as an intern, you can offer value. Share insights from your studies, previous internships, or even interesting articles you've read. This shows you're engaged and proactive.

  3. Ask for Advice, Not a Job: Focus on seeking advice and learning about their experiences rather than directly seeking job opportunities. This approach is less aggressive and fosters a more genuine connection.

  4. Be Mindful of Their Time: Professionals in IB are extremely busy. When requesting a meeting, be flexible with their schedule and consider asking for a short meeting, like a coffee break. Always prepare for the meeting in advance to make the most of the time you have.

  5. Follow Up: After meeting someone, send a thank-you email expressing gratitude for their time and advice. Mention something specific from your conversation to make it personal. This helps in building a lasting relationship.

  6. Engage in Firm Activities: Participate in any firm-wide networking events, seminars, or social activities. These are great opportunities to meet people in a more relaxed setting.

  7. Leverage Your Peer Network: Don't underestimate the power of networking with your fellow interns. They can be valuable allies and sources of information.

  8. Be Open About Your Interests: While it's important to learn about different groups within the firm, also share your interests and goals. This can lead to valuable insights and advice on how to navigate your career path within the firm.

Remember, the goal of internal networking is not only to explore full-time opportunities but also to build a network of mentors and peers who can support your career growth. Approach every interaction with respect, curiosity, and professionalism to make a positive impression.

Wasn't as great as other interns at this, but don't underestimate how eager people are willing to talk to interns especially (and new full times to a certain extent as well). It helps when you've had a previous interaction on a deal or some other workstream. But even in the break room, talk to people and ask if they want to grab coffee.
