Internship regrets?

Curious, for those of you that have interned in IB before, what are some things you regret/would have done differently looking back? What was some criticism you received that you’ve kept in mind as your career progressed

Based on the most helpful WSO content, interns in IB have shared various regrets and reflections on their experiences. Here are some common themes:

  • Work-Life Balance: Some interns wished they had maintained a better balance between their work commitments and personal life. The demanding hours of IB internships can lead to neglect of personal relationships and self-care.

  • Networking: A few regretted not networking enough during their internship. Building relationships within the firm can be crucial for receiving a return offer or learning about different areas within IB.

  • Being Proactive: Interns often mentioned they could have been more proactive in seeking out learning opportunities or asking for more work when things were slow.

  • Feedback Reception: Regarding criticism, interns have kept in mind the importance of attention to detail, time management, and the ability to handle feedback constructively.

  • Social Opportunities: Some regret not participating in more social events or bonding activities with their cohort or team, which could have led to stronger professional relationships.

  • Overemphasis on Technical Skills: While technical skills are important, some interns realized they should have also focused on soft skills, which are equally vital in client-facing roles.

Remember, these reflections are individual and can vary greatly from person to person. It's always beneficial to learn from past experiences and carry those lessons forward in your career.

My summer went pretty perfect tbh. I guess the only thing would be not going anywhere when ur “on call” on Sundays.

My group was kinda 50/50 on Sundays meaning half the time you’d work, half the time not. The only times I was really stressed was when I’d be out and about then get pinged and have to do stuff at random wifi spots (which good luck loading those 75 slide decks on the vpn and shitty free wifi).

Had a great convo with my MD once about how this job is all about managing your expectations and time. You won’t get burned out if you responsibly schedule things around your work (I.e don’t make plans Friday night when your in a sprint on one of ur deals b/c more likely than not you’ll have to cancel)
