Internships flowchart?

Hey I'm wondering if anyone can clarify what happens after 4th year at college:

1st year college 1st year internship . . . 4th year college 4th year internship? FT?

Is there such thing as a 4th year internship? Or do you go straight into FT? If so, are both in the same firm? If not, what do you do during the summer after 4th year?

Thanks.

at the risk of oversimplifying...

3rd year college 3rd year internship (summer) 4th year college FT

your most important internship is during the summer after your junior year. realistically, in order to be competitive for a decent junior-summer internship you will have to have at least one decent internship before.

a summer internship after you graduate is not the most common path, although it has been done before and i wouldn't discourage you from doing you don't have a good FT opportunity. if you get a FT after graduation, they may have you start right away (this is what happened to me), OR the more likely situation is they have you start in the fall. in this case you have the summer off and i'm sure you can think of something to do.
