Just to make you feel better, I had a poor GPA my freshman year as well because I didn’t know I wanted to do IB yet (3.5).You have time to turn it around. Maybe take some summer classes (online or at a JC). I know many people who didn’t have a freshman year internship and managed to get into IBD junior year. Do your best to fill your time with something useful like volunteering and getting involved in school to remedy not having an internship as best as possible. Frankly, do something that you like that makes you look interesting. For example, join a volunteer organization, do a service trip, and/or build something or start some sort of project.
You could also try and reach out to small financial services firms and ask to shadow and help out (show you are eager to learn) and eventually someone will bite and you could maybe throw that in your resume.
At this point, you’re not in a bad place. However, you will be if you get complacent and Do nothing of value.
Thank you so much.
You are actually in a very good position if you think about it. You are about to assuming if I am correct to start your sophomore year. I would recommend start reaching out to business and finance professors at your school. Internships during sophomore and junior year is most valuable but senior internships are very rare. Start networking and expand your social circle no matter what major or interest, one person can lead you to an offer. I would recommend having skills or attributions that compliment IB. This can include being a bank teller, working in a finance group or organization or anything that basically deals with the management of money. You are young and you have time, that is essentially the most important asset you have in front of you.
