Investment Banking Careers in Spain from non-target

I do not get why people from the best public unis in Spain (eg UC3M, UPF, UPM, UPC) cannot break into Investment Banking, especially to the bulge bracket. At UC3M we have the highest grades across all the universities of the country in the fields of both social sciences (Business/Law/International Studies/Economics) and engineering. Most of Business/Economics dual degrees required a cutoff of 12.6-13.6 out of 14 points in Selectividad/EVAU (the Spanish University Entry Exam) being the average even higher as you can imagine. In my case, I even got MBB interviews in the US (without coming from a target uni and with not a favorable visa status and yes applying to US locations) which are highly selective and none for IB... I think is even easier to get it in USA (and they pay much better) even though you are discriminated against because of your visa status (unless you are studying full time there - not for exchange).

The IB system is so crooked and it is so classist in Spain (and even in London because the Spanish team is the one who recruits us lol), this is not elitism/meritocracy but rather who has more relatives in the industry in the highest leadership positions and has 18K euros to afford Esade each year (x4 or x6 if you do a dual degree this is more than 100K only for tuition fee) :) I am sure that they are also really smart and lucky of them that they have such a successful alumni network and resources from the uni to boost your career. Nonetheless, I do not complain about their potential advantages, the main issue is that we are treated unfairly without even given the opportunity to participate in a face to face selection process.

I do not know anyone even searching it through LinkedIn that has achieved to gain a full-time position right after graduation (really few people after working in Big4/boutiques), we lack alumni to support us as mentor (a clear disadvantage) and believe me when I say that we prepare hard and we are a really good fit.

Hope it would change in the future. The cutoff for becoming a UC3M undergrad is increasing over the years and the reputation going higher so I guess we can achieve this in a near future...
