Is being talked behind the back normal?

Context: Working in LD, 2nd month (total 1 year) of internship in an EB; mainly works with other ppl in other european countries so not much work with the local teams, also smaller office so it houses only around 15 ppl. Basically go to office at 9am > leave at 10-11pm and wfh till 1-2am

So today, saturday, i have to go out of town for a family event so i have to be MIA from 13-21:00, I submitted my work to an analyst and associate at 1130 and went out, communicated that i wont be at home / office till 2100. Then at 6pm the analyst called my phone as she found some mistakes in my work and basically said it is "unacceptable" to be afk until 9pm and quote on quote, "everyone is working on multiple live deals and we expect you to work on the weekends too". Then she went on to talk about another analyst (lets call her Clara) is saying that the fact that i am not in office beyong 11pm is also "unacceptable". But the point is, since i am working with the offshore guys i am not really "chilling at home", which the analyst claimed, beyond 11pm weekdays and on weekends. Also the guys i am working with are satisfied with my work, and i have no problem working with them for long hours.

So the questions is : is this culture normal in IB? To stay at desk despite you have no work? Or to push off a family meeting as being afk for 8hr on weekends is unacceptable?

This is seriously hurting my mental as Clara is actively gossiping abt me at office, to the degree i can overheard. I think the associates are fine with my work but idk how to navigate the analyst politics. Also pondering abt quitting but im from garbage non targets and cant really find a job in the current market. Please give advice, appreciate it a lot.

Everyone loves to punch down, especially analysts (who have spent the last 1-3 years being shit on by their superiors). Don’t take it personally, analysts and associates have very little visibility of how hard their direct peers are working and everyone’s a victim in IB, “I’m dying while the lazy intern goes home”.

its up to you to navigate the politics and judge how much sway these analysts have within the group (likely little), but if your analysts are confronting you on this they probably got shat on by their VPs at one point for not being in late so might be a sign of the culture.

PS, it never hurts to be direct and pull your superiors (not analysts) for a coffee and ask for clear guidance and feedback on your performance

Nah Clara is a total bitch and you should punch that snitch in the mouth if the opportunity arises. Similarly, that other analyst calling an intern on his phone and going all bitchy seems to have an ego trip and should shut the fuck up. You need to find allies though - got a feeling you're a girl so find male allies because they'll 100% simp for you.
