Is it possible to network internationally and land an IB internship in Switzerland?
Hi everyone,
I’m a Finance student studying outside of Switzerland and I’m curious if anyone has experience or advice on networking from abroad to secure an internship at a Swiss investment bank like UBS, Credit Suisse, or Julius Baer.
Do people actually manage to land such opportunities without being based in Switzerland, or is relocating first essentially required? Any insights or stories would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Landing an IB internship in Switzerland as an international candidate is challenging but not impossible. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are the key insights:
Recruitment Focus: Swiss investment banking recruitment is heavily concentrated on local talent, particularly from Swiss universities like St. Gallen. Being Swiss or studying in Switzerland provides a significant advantage.
Language Requirements: German is almost a prerequisite for most roles in Switzerland. Without proficiency in German, breaking into the market becomes significantly harder.
Networking from Abroad: While networking internationally is possible, it is much more difficult to secure opportunities without being based in Switzerland. Many banks in Switzerland have small teams (e.g., UBS, Credit Suisse, and boutiques like Alantra or GCA Altium), and they often execute deals out of other offices like London. This makes the market highly competitive and localized.
Relocation Considerations: Relocating to Switzerland or pursuing education there could improve your chances significantly. Being physically present allows for better networking opportunities and demonstrates commitment to the region.
Lifestyle and Career Path: The Swiss IB lifestyle is attractive with high pay and low taxes, but career progression and exit opportunities (e.g., to PE or HF) are generally weaker compared to other financial hubs.
If you're serious about pursuing this path, consider: - Learning German to meet language expectations. - Building connections with Swiss professionals through LinkedIn or alumni networks. - Attending events or programs in Switzerland to establish a local presence.
While it's tough to break in as an outsider, strategic networking and skill-building can make it possible.
