Is my Boutique Stuck in the Stone Age?
At a smaller boutique investment bank and when we finish decks (CIMs, MPs, etc.) the analysts print them, hole punch them 15 pages at a time, insert dividers, backs, and covers, bind them with coils by hand and then use a handheld crimping tool on the ends as the finishing touch. This can take hours and if there is a botched print job it can really add up. Do other small banks have similar grueling processes??? I know at bigger banks you press print and the print shop handles it. Curious what other people go through and if we are as stuck in the stone age as it feels like
Not uncommon (or at least it wasn't a decade ago). Other option would be to find a local print shop to outsource it to, but depending on location, you might not have 24/7 coverage.
Pretty normal
Why would you print and bind CIMs? Those are distributed electronically.
Pitches and MPs I can see and are still largely done via hard copy. If you don't have scale, you have to do it internally. Fedex, etc. don't have branded covers and style consistency that IB needs.
Lol we did this at my small boutique for pitch decks and MPs (very weird you do it for CIMs). The worst part was they were rarely opened.
Yeah the CIM mention was a typo, meant for pitches and MPs. I wonder if 30 years ago they did it for CIMs too lol
This is common at all banks. Difference is the larger banks have dedicated printing rooms that do this for you. However, if you need to print late / are in a pinch you tend to do this yourself.
As mentioned above, typical for pitches, MPs, or just Dismat for in person meetings. Really weird you did this for a CIM tho.
Feel like we are always printing late as there are last second changes to the deck. Does your print team own the deck like it's their own / QC diligently?
Never bound CIMs, as those are distributed electronically; but, this is always done for MPs.
Wow... didn't know y'all at smaller banks had to deal with this.
My print room was open 24/7
Even though I'm at an int'l bank, still have to manually print books at ~25 person non-HQ office.
We have interns
Year round? Someone's gotta do the dirty work when the interns go back to kindergarten
Maybe 1-2 weeks downtime between cycles but yes we have interns all year round. We do the same as OP describes when they are not there
Back to binding Analyst 1!!! You know we can't trust you with excel yet. Jokes aside my NYC boutique still does this and we were acquired by a big international bank. Funny how much stuff like this you still do in banking.
Printer jams at 3 AM are part of the junior experience.
