Is there a line?

Was talking to an MD at a BB recruiting event. There were about 3 of us in talking to the guy. The bank was wrapping up and the MD told us he had to catch a flight. One of the kids insisted that he walk him back to his car. As the recruiting team was leaving, he held the door open for ALL of them and then walked with the MD down the street to his rental (i happened to live nearby).

Does he have a better shot of getting an interview than the rest of us?

it's pretty common sense i think - if he was smooth then he could have a better shot, but he could also have easily come off as a brown noser

if he was a dorky obsessive nerd than maybe not. :)

What Did he say exactly? "Can I walk back with you and talk about this opportunity?" lol probably not, asking permission can sound geeky...

What were his exact words? Was he charming with a nice smile? if he was a smooth operator than he PROBABLY does have a better chance than you guys.

It depends on how he handled it. For example, a duo of recruiters came to campus and had an information session. When they were leaving, one of them asked me if there was a BoA around. I said yea there is, that I was headed that way, and that I'd show him. I walked him towards the BoA, talked to him in a 1v1 situation for an extra 5 minutes and in that time he gave me his direct contact information (as opposed to the HR e-mail). It all depends on how he handled it. If the student handled it well, there's huge upside. If he handled it poorly, there's probably minimal downside.

you guys are familiar with 'smooth operator' by sade right? Watched it on youtube after this.

wannabe: what did you/he say while you were walking with him?

I almost laughed reading that, though. Ok, I guess if he actually got the MD's contact information and goes and contacts him on his own, maybe... chances of getting it in that situation are pretty low.

And first-round interview decisions are made by the analysts/HR from reading resumes and based on their knowledge of the school in question. MDs typically only have the final say on who gets hired.

In general if you are very proactive and get to know recruiters and other people who make the initial decisions and show a lot of interest via follow-up, you do improve your chances. But in this case I doubt that an MD would push for someone he met for 5 minutes or take the time to tell HR to give him an interview... MDs just don't have time/don't care. It may help him if he makes it to the final round and the MD remembers him though.
