JP Morgan MMBSI (middle market banking)

What are your thoughts on the middle market team at JPM? My ultimate goal is to break into IB and was wondering if this path is doable/ideal. Would it be possible to go from an SA position in MMBSI to IB internally at JPM or would it require a segway into a top MBA program first?

Take with a grain of salt, but from the friends I have at the firm, it seems like it would be a tough transition. Have to think it would require you really having a connection to a group/someone in a group to really push for you. Think MMBSI is going to be even harder than moving from a traditional commercial or corporate banking group. That said, I have heard JPM has strong internal mobility, so if you were willing to start over as an A1, then it may just be possible.

Thanks for the insight. I never knew how flexible it was to internally move at JPM. And yeah, I wouldn’t mind starting over at A1 in IB if I transitioned from MMBSI to IB after 1-2 yrs of experience. I have one question though. Why would MMBSI be tougher to transition to IB than other commercial or corporate positions? Isn’t MMBSI part of the commercial banking team? Thanks for the response!

You'd probably be better off checking out some of the other threads on MMBSI as I don't know too much about it specifically. Just from conversations I've had about it, seems like it's viewed as a slightly less rigorous program as traditional CB analysts. Could just be the impression I got, but worth looking into. Again, probably possible, just will take work.

Why is middle market banking commercial banking and not considered investment banking?

Commercial banking is typically what banks brand their middle market corporate banking offering. On the small end, you have business banking. In middle market, you have commercial banking. For large businesses, you have corporate banking. At JPM, that Line of Business is the Corporate and Investment Bank. However, corporate client banking and investment banking have different roles to play.
