Not a primer per se or specifically banking related, but reading the CIA fact-book on each of the countries in Latin America would probably be a good start.
David Foster Wallace is one of my favorite authors. His interviews are terrific and essay compilations are stellar. He definitely knew what was going with the U.S. years before anyone else.
I would focus on studying Brazil, Mexico's economies most. Since they are head & shoulders above others. Then, Argentina, Colombia, Spain, Chile, Venezuela.
TBH while it is definitely not necessary, if you want to be a leader in this space it is highly encouraged that you speak some level of Spanish to read spanish or Portugues for Brazil.
