LBS MiM / Big 4 Tech risk grad role to IBD (or any other role in banking)

Recent grad from King's College London (July 2023). Looking to get into IBD (or any other role in banking). Got an offer from LBS for their MiM program and an offer from a Big 4: Tech risk consultant. The job (2 years) entails me completing an ACA qualification. Will have no visa post MiM as I'm already on a Grad visa (Post study work visa). I am looking to get into IBD. No prior experience at a bank in London, experience in India at a capital advisory firm (Equity research) and a Big 4 summer internship (strategy & transactions). What should I choose?

Based on the WSO threads discussing career transitions and educational choices, here's a strategic breakdown to help you decide between the LBS MiM program and the Big 4 Tech Risk Consultant role:

  1. LBS MiM Program Advantages:

    • Networking Opportunities: LBS is well-regarded in the finance industry, and its network could be invaluable for breaking into investment banking.
    • Relevant Education: The MiM program will provide you with a solid foundation in management and finance, aligning well with the skills required in IBD.
    • Recruitment Pipeline: LBS has strong ties with financial institutions, which could increase your chances of landing interviews and offers in IBD.
  2. Big 4 Tech Risk Consultant Role Advantages:

    • Professional Qualification: Completing an ACA qualification is prestigious and provides a strong credential that is respected in the finance industry, though more aligned with accounting and risk rather than front-office banking roles.
    • Immediate Work Experience: Gaining immediate, relevant work experience can be beneficial, especially in a well-respected firm like a Big 4. This could also lead to internal opportunities within the firm’s finance divisions.
  3. Considerations:

    • Visa Situation: Post-MiM, you mentioned having no visa. This could be a significant barrier to employment in the UK after graduation. The job offer from the Big 4 likely includes visa sponsorship, which is a crucial factor to consider.
    • Long-Term Career Goals: If your primary goal is to enter IBD, the MiM might offer a more direct path, provided you can manage the visa situation. The Big 4 role, while valuable, may require a longer route to transition into IBD.
  4. Recommendation:

    • Given your goal to enter IBD and the educational benefits of the LBS MiM, this program could be the better choice if you can find a solution to the visa issue. Networking, leveraging the school’s resources for finance careers, and focusing on finance-related internships during your study could enhance your transition into IBD.
    • If the visa issue poses too great a risk, or if you value immediate work experience and financial stability, accepting the Big 4 offer could be the safer choice. You could later leverage the ACA qualification and work experience to transition into finance roles, possibly within the Big 4’s corporate finance divisions.

Ultimately, weigh these factors based on your personal circumstances, risk tolerance, and career aspirations.
