Why would you agree to a reference check before the offer? These are a post-offer thing.
That said it's usually a good sign, especially if they are chasing the person you used to work with. Make sure they respond but you may just be waiting on that, they won't do reference checks for a rejection
I believe the check was more informal in nature and not the kind of formal checks that come after an offer. Yes, my ex-colleague did get back to the head. Hope that I get call over the next few days!
