Litigation & Valuation

I graduated back in Dec. 2012 with my BBA from a non-target and fell flat on my face in the job hunt. I took up providing consulting services to previous employers for whom I had performed menial tasks during my undergrad. I did this independently and obviously for a discount compared to what any other consulting firm would have charged.

Fast forward 5 months; I was able to somehow get in the door of a CPA firm in their litigation and valuation support segment. The firm is not Big 4, but is ranked in the highly in ADP's and Vault's best accounting firms (Yay!).

Does anyone have any insight about breaking into M&A after a few years in the aforementioned position, possibly post-MBA? Is it possible? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

You need to decide what type of M&A you want to break into. There are many different teams that get involved in a single M&A transaction (valuation, due diligence, legal, integration, strategy, funding, etc.) - which do you want to join? All of them require vastly different skill sets. Decide what you want, then people can give you advice to help you get there.

My understanding is that the majority of it will not be transaction based. Since i dont start for another week or so it's difficult to comment on the specifics.

However, here is an excerpt from the firms website describing their valuation services: intangible asset valuations and impairment, including goodwill and technology investments, Family limited partnerships, Due diligence process for mergers and acquisitions, stockholder disputes, Operating company and business interests, whether controlling or monority interest

Depends on what firm it is, but " Due diligence process for mergers and acquisitions" tends to be the heaviest portion of those. Generally you have an ability to influence the work you get put on, so I would advise you to try and focus on DD for M&Aor shareholder disputes rather than purchase price allocations, intangible asset valuations, etc.
