M&A @Deloitte

Hi, I just accepted an offer from Deloitte in the M&A DD area, (I am 24 yo) I would like to break into investment banking in 2-3 years, is that possible?

also what do you think about M&A in a big4? is it a good job?

I highly recommend you move into IB after 6 months-1 year. THey'll work you hard at Deloitte, yet your compensation and bonus will be extremely bad (I think base will be 70k and bonus 10k), for working 80 hours weeks and sometimes more? My comp numbers may be off slightly but it is really bad. I haven't heard anyone say good things about M&A at any of the Big 4.

I work in Big 4 TAS (valuations) and can confirm this is all mostly true.

That being said, I think Big 4 FDD offers a pretty good path to IBD. I’ve been researching and networking with a few MM IB’s, and Big 4 FDD is well represented.

Like anything in Big 4 TAS, the pay will be maybe 60% of market and the hours will not be that much better than IB because they know their brand value and can churn thru staff no problem. If you are a high performer and the current climate in IB recruiting holds, i think you should plan to lateral on the timeline the guy above suggested. You’ll probably have more live deal experience than most IB analysts at that point since you won’t have to pitch clients.

If you want to do IB and plan accordingly, you can definitely leverage your job into a MM IB lateral. I can’t comment on EB or BB, as I’ve really only looked at MM, but I assume those would be much more of a stretch.
