Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you should think about your decision:

1. Brand vs. Function

  • A top BB name carries significant weight in recruiting, even if the role is in markets structuring. Recruiters and bankers often view the BB brand as a signal of quality, which can open doors for lateral moves or buy-side opportunities.
  • However, directly relevant coverage experience at a lower-ranked bank might be more immediately applicable for M&A or LevFin recruiting. If the sector you’re covering aligns with your long-term goals, this could be a strong advantage.

2. Markets to IBD Pivot

  • Moving from markets structuring to M&A or LevFin is possible but not straightforward. Structuring roles are often seen as "close enough" to IBD because they involve technical skills, deal exposure, and client interaction. However, the pivot will require networking and demonstrating your interest in traditional IB.
  • Internally, BBs often have mobility programs, but transitioning from markets to IBD can be competitive. Externally, you’ll need to position your structuring experience as relevant to the transactional nature of M&A or LevFin.

3. Fallback Options

  • If later recruiting doesn’t go as planned, the markets seat at a top BB might offer better fallback options. The BB brand can help you pivot into other high-profile roles, such as corporate development, strategy, or even specialized buy-side roles (e.g., credit funds or structured finance).
  • The coverage seat at a lower-ranked bank might limit your options if the bank’s name doesn’t carry as much weight in recruiting.

4. LevFin Specifically

  • Structuring experience can provide an edge for LevFin recruiting, as both involve complex financing solutions and technical modeling. However, general coverage experience might still be more directly aligned with LevFin’s transactional focus.
  • If LevFin is your ultimate goal, you’ll need to emphasize the overlap between structuring and leveraged finance in your story during recruiting.

Final Thoughts:

  • If you value the BB brand and are confident in your ability to network and pivot, the markets structuring role at the top BB might be the better choice.
  • If you prioritize directly relevant experience and are passionate about the sector you’d cover, the traditional IB role at the lower-ranked bank could be more advantageous.

Ultimately, your decision should align with your long-term goals and your confidence in navigating the recruiting process.

#2 obviously. function matters more than platform although it might be a toss up if ur genuinely at like a no name boutique

obv coverage grouo much better, abs is a good career, but it pigeonholes you into that career, exits are hard to come by outside of some other structured products role.

You can be at Goldman and abs structuring or trading is still just that. gives you no skills that you can transfer to say equities investing, and even private credit direct lending they are not transferable. You can only exit in hedhe funds that trade mbs/abs or clo managers.
