Might Be Going Blind, Is My Career Over

So I'm going to an ophthalmologist this week. Been having symptoms of a detached retina. I know I'm being a pessimist, but in preparing for the worst, I don't see much hope of being in investment banking if I go blind ( applying to internships right now). Anyone know people or of cases with similar situations. Thanks for your help and support.

I grew up with a guy who suffered from sight conditions his entire life; he is currently blind in one eye and has terrible vision in the other. He will never own a drivers license, needs special accommodations almost everywhere he goes, and there is no telling when he will go completely blind. He recently started an IB career at a MM firm.

It is certainly an uphill battle and you need to disclose your condition to the company, but chin up, if he can do it then you have no excuses.

Best of luck to you.

Here's some inspiration. There is a former USC student I had the distinct pleasure of meeting during our LA recruiting process . I don't want to dox people so please remove this if it's not appropriate, but his name is Julian Sanchez. I met him at a USC bulge bracket panel and he, being blind in both eyes and using a cane, was asking people to point him towards different banks in order to network.

He ended up with a job at Goldman Sachs in Credit Risk. To this day he is the most inspiring person I have met. Here is an article written about his story, please give it a read:

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

I know of two legally blind IB analysts at banks in major cities (SF/CHI/NYC). One is blind in one eye, other has terrible eyesight in both eyes. Both receive accommodations, or just zoom in really close their screens. They both work very hard, are very smart (Target Schools, etc) and found firms/groups that are open to having them. Work hard, be genuine and network, you can get there. Don't let this roadblock take you down, but also make sure you find a great doctor. Taking care of your health should be your first priority.

Thank you everyone. You've all made me feel a lot better about this. Here's hoping nothing is wrong, but if there is, I'll make the best of it

Good luck my friend, we are wishing you the best and success in the future. :)
