Moelis Lateral Interview

Moelis Lateral Interview – Technical Prep

I have an upcoming lateral analyst interview with Moelis and was hoping to get some insight from anyone who has gone through the process recently.

What types of technical questions should I expect, and are there any areas you’d recommend focusing on beyond the standard IB technicals? Also curious how heavily they tend to drill into deal experience and whether there is typically a modeling test later in the process.

Any insight on the interview format or level of technical difficulty would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

For a lateral analyst interview with Moelis, here’s what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Technical Questions:

    • Moelis interviews are known to be highly technical. You should expect in-depth questions on LBO modeling and accretion/dilution analysis. These are areas where candidates have reported being heavily tested.
    • Be prepared for restructuring (RX) questions as well, as Moelis has a strong presence in this space. Having a baseline knowledge of RX processes could give you an edge.
    • Standard IB technicals like DCF, WACC, and valuation multiples are also fair game, but the focus tends to be on more advanced topics.
  2. Deal Experience:

    • Moelis interviewers often drill into your deal experience. Be ready to discuss the transaction rationale, your specific role, and the outcomes of deals you’ve worked on.
    • You should also be able to explain how you managed tasks like data rooms, financial analysis, or client interactions.
  3. Modeling Test:

    • A modeling test is likely part of the process. Candidates have reported both shorter tests (1-hour) and longer, more detailed tests (3-hour LBO models) in similar lateral processes. Make sure you’re comfortable building and interpreting models under time constraints.
  4. Interview Format:

    • The process typically includes multiple rounds:
      • Behavioral questions: Why Moelis? Why are you lateraling? Why this specific group?
      • Technical interviews: These can be one-on-one or panel-style, focusing on your technical knowledge and deal experience.
      • Case studies or modeling tests: These are used to assess your practical skills.
  5. Preparation Tips:

    • Leverage resources like the WSO Prep Pack, Rosenbaum & Pearl’s Investment Banking book, and MultipleExpansion materials for modeling practice.
    • Speak to current or former Moelis analysts to understand the firm’s culture and expectations.
    • Focus on being technically sound and having a clear, logical story for why you’re making the move.

Moelis is known for its rigorous interview process, so over-preparation is key. Good luck!
