Moving to Dallas where to live?? But one issue...

I'm moving to Dallas and trying to get an idea on where to live as a mid-20s single guy looking to have a relatively urban walkable experience, nightlife, clubs, bars, entertainment, usual fun young person stuff.

But one issue. My office is in Plano. Obviously I don't want some crazy long commute (and I hear the tolls there can be a pain?) but also don't want to live in a suburb in the middle of nothing going on. Otherwise, I would have easily just picked downtown in the city or in the Uptown neighborhood.

I've heard Addison is kind of an in-between spot, but it doesn't really fit with the criteria/lifestyle I described above from what I understand. I don't have any existing connections in the area so making friends and stuff is pretty important.

Any thoughts or help would be much appreciated!!

I've lived in Dallas for awhile now. Personally, would highly suggest living in that Uptown, lower Greenville, Knox/henderson, etc. type area and commute to work. Living outside of Dallas (Plano, Frisco, Addison, Irving, etc.) is just going to severely hamper your ability to have mid-20s type fun, at least conveniently. You'll just end up taking long Ubers down to those areas anyways if you are looking to have a night life and meet other groups of mid-20s type people.

There are pockets of night life in those suburb areas that you could live around (Legacy West, The Star, etc.), but the dominant social scene for people your age will be Uptown, lower greenville, knox/henderson, etc. Most of the people going out in Plano, Addison, Frisco, etc. will be more your upper 20s, low-to-mid 30s type people. Mostly couples.

Thanks so much. From the research I've done, it seems the commute from Uptown/Lower Greenville and surrounding areas to Plano would be a bit rough (and rack on a lot in tolls). Is that a commute people really make everyday in finance-type roles? I guess I'm willing to make the trade off if it's really that much of a difference in social life versus something like Addison.

Been in Dallas for 12 years now. If you're looking for a social life, you want to live in actual Dallas. Uptown, Victory Park, Knox Henderson, Lower Greenville. As an above poster mentioned, the suburbs don't have a lot of young single people so your social opportunities will be severely limited. If you already had friends in the area then sure live by work and come down to have fun on the weekend. But also those suburbs are the opposite of walkable, which it seems like you value highly. Plenty of people make the commute, and you can take 75 rather than the Dallas North Tollway to cut down on toll fees.

Been in Dallas for a few years, all the other posters recommendations are very good. Maybe except Las Colinas (i'm currently there, it's pretty sparse in terms of entertainment). Yes, Toyota Music Factory is there but there isn't a good variety imo. The issue you're gonna have living in Dallas proper is the commute to Plano. The decision is basically do you want to live in Dallas and commute 45-60 mins each way everyday to Plano (toll or no toll it's a time drain) or live closer to work and Uber to bars and fun areas in Dallas? Either way it's less than ideal.

Also I feel like Addison is for like upper 30s family. I don't think are gonna enjoy it.

Have lived in Dallas for a bit and agree with the recommendations here.  Commuting isn’t fun, but I think you’ll be much much happier living near the social areas (uptown, Lower Greenville, Knox-Henderson) than the suburbs, which are nice for families but don’t really have anything going on (I’d generally include Addison in this bucket).

Someone mentioned it, but I’d look for places in Uptown or Knox-Henderson with easy highway access (tollway or 75). Maybe find a gym or something close to work - in my experience traffic isn’t bad before 8am or after 6:30/7pm

Everyone here has given good advice, but you should figure out what highway will get you to work the fastest and work that into your decision. Going to either be 75 or the tollway. If tollway then go for Uptown/West Village, Knox/Henderson, or Victory Park. If 75 then Knox/Henderson or Greenville

I think you explore Legacy West if you want to be by work, or West Village if you want to be more in town. Not that they're bad places, but I'd avoid south of that (uptown / Victory Park) as both areas have lost "share" to West Village/Knox Henderson area over the last handful of years + puts you even further from the office.

If you're in town, driving up the tollway ("DNT") is preferable, but the toll bills do add up. 75 can be an absolute bear around rush hour...
