Networking from MO - BofA NYC

This summer I’ve got a MO quant role at BofA. I know they rotate between corporate credit and global markets which seem like the best groups, but I’m scared they’ll put me in compliance.

Trying to ideally break into LevFin, as it seems good to jump into private credit — an ‘end goal’ of mine.

I don’t want to make it seem like I’m taking this internship for granted — I feel privileged for even getting an internship at a big bank. My question is how do I leverage this internship to either put me in the direction of IB/FO or maybe even get a return offer for IB? In addition to what direction I should take, would love to know any technical skills I should study to prove that I can take on the additional challenges of the new role I want?

Ah, the classic maneuver from MO to FO, a tale as old as time in the finance jungle! First off, kudos on snagging that MO quant role at BofA. It's a solid foothold, and you're right to eye the LevFin leap for that sweet private credit dream. Now, let's swing through the vines of networking and skill-building to help you Tarzan your way into IB/FO territory or secure that golden return offer in IB.

Networking Like a Pro

  • Internal Networking: Start building relationships within your team and beyond. Express genuine interest in learning about others' roles, especially those in LevFin or areas close to IB. Coffee chats are your best friend here.
  • Mentorship: Seek out a mentor within the bank, preferably in the IB division. A mentor can provide invaluable advice, introduce you to the right people, and advocate for you when opportunities arise.
  • Leverage Projects: Excel in your assigned projects and seek opportunities to work on or contribute to projects that have visibility to the IB division. This showcases your skills and interest in transitioning.
  • Attend Internal Events: Be on the lookout for any internal networking events, talks, or seminars. These are great opportunities to meet people from the IB division in a more casual setting.

Skill Building for the Leap

  • Financial Modeling: This is a must-have skill for anyone looking to break into IB. Familiarize yourself with DCF, LBO, and merger models. There are plenty of online resources, including WSO courses, that can help you master these.
  • Understanding of LevFin: Deep dive into leveraged finance. Understand the mechanics, the players, the deals, and the market. Being able to speak knowledgeably about recent deals or trends will set you apart.
  • Technical Skills: Brush up on your Excel skills, learn VBA for automation, and if you're feeling adventurous, Python for data analysis. These skills are highly valued in IB and can give you an edge.
  • Market Knowledge: Stay informed about the financial markets, with a focus on the sectors you're interested in. Being able to discuss current events and their impact on finance will make you a more engaging conversationalist.

Final Thoughts

Remember, transitioning from MO to IB is a marathon, not a sprint. It requires patience, persistence, and a lot of networking. Make the most of your internship by learning as much as you can, building relationships, and demonstrating your eagerness to take on more. And don't forget, every interaction is a chance to make an impression, so always bring your A-game.

Good luck, and may your finance journey be as thrilling as a barrel roll through the stock market!
