networking options

hey guys I have a question about networking with alumni. I'm a sophomore targeting alumni at boutique investment banks for this summer and I just had a question.
If I find 2 people at a specific bank that went to the same school as me, but one is an analyst/other lower level banker that is in IBD (my choice) and the other is a higher up guy such as a director/MD BUT in a different role (S+t) which should I try and contact:
a) network with the analyst who might have less pull but is in IBD, so I actually know a little something about the business and can talk intelligently about it. Possibly referring me to a higher up person in IBD?
b) Or should I talk with the director at another department(research/s+t), who has more pull and can refer you to someone in IBD. Only problem is I won't be able to relate much with them, since I dont know much about their businesses.
Any advice? Thanks.

Try to contact the analyst in IBD.  They're generally more helpful than MDs in other lines of buiness.   Be sure to end the conversation asking him if there are other analysts / associates who might be willing to talk with you and offer a diferent perspective.  Stay in touch and persistently work your way up the food chain.

Not sure why it has to be either / or, you can reach out to both as the S&T MD might be more helpful than you would think.

Do NOT contact them both.  If you do, use a fake e-mail address and pseudonym (e.g. "Job" as in Mission Impossible).  Twice a week, every bank has a capital markets-wide (S&T, IBD, DCM, ER, etc) meeting in a large banquet hall at which hundreds of employees, from MDs to analysts, compare e-mails on a large screen that they've received from students and candidates.

I don't see why you can't contact both.  Maybe ask the MD if you can do an informational interview (without trying to get a job at all) to learn about the company, what he does, and how he got there.  Most are very receptive to talking to students if they have some free time.  You can talk about more job specific things with the analyst and let him know you are interested in going into his position in a couple years, maybe ask him for advice.
