Networking with Alumni vs Nationality

Hey everyone. Was wondering if it'd be better to connect with my school's alumni or people from my nationality (smaller but tighter knit group). For context I go to a target. I feel I'd be able to get a referral easier from people from my same background, however, I think someone mentioned banks usually have teams specifically for each target college. Then again, I feel like it's more competitive to stand out to the alums.

Which direction do you recommend I put more effort in?
