New Events for a Finance Club

Hello monkeys!

I'm lucky enough to land a leadership position in my university's finance club. I was thinking of repeating some events we've done in the past, but also would like to add new ones. Any ideas for feasible events?

So far, we have a few things like speakers, interview skills workshops, stock trading competitions, and firm visits lined up.

Anything unique you monkeys have done back in university for your finance club??

Start with a seminar about all of the different careers you can go into with a finance degree. (Buy side vs Sell side, Corp Fin, etc.) Usually members will have various levels of knowledge regarding the industry, so it is a good place to begin.

Hold a panel with some juniors/seniors/alumni who have held positions in different areas of the industry (IB, S&T, ER, etc.) and have them discuss what each role was like.

Dedicate a few sessions to networking, and possibly even sponsor an event where students can apply theirskills. Teaching things such as cold emailing/calling, and how to navigate networking events is something I wish my club spent more time on.

I can share my experience as a leader of the investment club at my uni. We focus a lot on learning valuation but we also dedicate some time to review cv/cover letters, talk and give presentations about any economic/political topic to develop our presentation and PPT skills and something I really like is that we read a book every month and then we discuss about it. Hope it helps mate

I would like to take advantage of this thread and ask what could we do (as university society members) to develop our networking skills? Any idea? I´ve had several chats with bankers but they do not care a shit about me (which I know it is normal) but how do you guys do to make them be interested in helping a student securing an interview? They´ve given me a lot of advice on CV/CL and even one of them reviewed my CV and CL and gave me very valuable advice, but is there any way this relationship can continue and move to the next level?

Any comment helps!

To be honest, in my opinion, you've got something great going on. They really aren't going to help you secure an interview, but they're going to help you get at least first rounds, I guess?

Plus if they've given you lots of advice on CV/CL, you should see this as a positive thing- that is, they do care a shit about you and your "shallow" relationship is already indeed quite deep!

I've found panels with seniors who've obtained offers to be very very useful. Other than that, a session where all members could get headshots would be pretty useful -> most college students don't have a professional picture.
