No early promotion to ASSOC
Hi all,
Was hoping to get promoted early to associate this year but had an average review and am not getting promoted. For context, I’m 2 years into a 3 year analyst program and about half of my class got the promotion. Originally, my plan was to get promoted and stay an extra year but now that that’s not happening im thinking of leaving. What would y’all do in this situation? I feel undervalued and, quite frankly, am shocked.
My two cents for what they’re worth.
Shake it off. That’s much easier said than done, but you still have a great paying job in a harsh economy. wait a little longer and you should get that ASSOC nod.
Keep your head up. You still have a career trajectory better than most people in the world
quick question - does your bank treat 3rd years and 1yr asso the same? if so, you might be in a pretty good spot to cruise a bit. Also, I always think it is a good idea to keep your ear to the ground and your options open.
Pretty much, 3 years are typically just staffed by themselves without an associate. Sometimes with a first year.
It’s just a blow to your pride right now. I mean 50% got the promotion so that’s got to be embarrassing.
Just shake it off and see how you feel in a few months when you’re anger has dissipated.
If you’re still pissed or embarrassed, then start looking.
I’m more pissed because every deal I’m on I’m literally running the process by myself or I’m holding the MBA ASSOC’s hand. The more I think about it the more absurd it is, fuck this place.
What bank? EB? Thats so screwed man Im sorry
I’ve seen this happen and the guy ended up getting an associate role at a rival bank. Maybe try that route?
Coast and buy time to recruit for associate roles elsewhere. And make sure the average review is a them problem not a you one going forward.
Are you planning on staying in banking? Just lateral as soon as you get your bonus, other IBs will be very happy to have a first year associate with several years of experience. You do need to be able to explain why you didn't get promoted so start thinking of reasons
Don’t think I’ll stay in banking. My original plan was to stay 1 year as an associate and then jump tot he buy side. I think it makes more sense to just start looking for buy side jobs now
got it. If it helps a lot of people trying to leave intentionally do 3rd year instead of early promote because it becomes harder to recruit for buyside once you're in 1st year associate seat. so it's common enough that interviewers won't be spooked by you doing a third year
