Nomura vs Barclays Summer Internship

Hey guys,

I have two summer internship offers for London, next summer. They are both generic IBD offers (could be M&A, ECM, DCM or Industry group), and the firms are Nomura and Barclays.

Which one would you recommend me to choose?

Thanks

Barclays is probably stronger in London (I'm just guessing) but Nomura is no joke either...if I'm not wrong about Barclays' strength in London and that's important to you, go with them. Otherwise, pick the place you feel you fit in better at/would enjoy more, as you'll do just fine at Nomura in London too.

Barclays has the slightly stronger reputation in London, but at both places you would do fine. Barclays is located in Canary Wharf whereas Nomura is in the city. So in terms of location Nomura has an edge. However, as you'll be spending most of your time inside the office this shouldn't be that much of a determining factor.

Thanks for your answers.

I'd like to know if it makes any difference the fact that Barclays is ranked as 5th in EMEA M&A and even better in DCM while Nomura struggles to be within the top 20.

in case I weren't hired after the internship, would this difference in the CV be taken into account by other banks (and potential employers)?

As someone above said, Barclays has the slightly stronger reputation but I don't think you'll be disadvantaged coming from either bank- if you have to go through FT recruiting, I'm sure both would be considered valuable SA experience. I think (and this is my opinion, but probably not everyones) that once you are able to work for a certain "level" of bank (in terms of prestige, dealflow, etc) the most important thing becomes the people you work with/where you fit in- after all, you'll spend a lot of time there.

I believe that Barclays and Nomura are both above that minimum "level," and I'd personally just pick the place/people I liked better.

First I thought you didn't do your DD, but apparently you did. Barclays vs Nomura is a no-brainer. Barclays wins hands down, no contest. While in general Nomura may be a nice place to be at, in BB terms it is tier 3 and struggling. Having been through the recruitment process I have to say Nomura was the easiest in handing out offers. In the end I know quite a few people who signed with Nomura and are shopping for other offers, willing to renege.

Do you have any interest in coming to the US? Nomura just sucks balls in NYC - and even if you're stuck in London, I'd still have a slight preference for Barcap.

Wouldn't a place like Nomura potentially make it easier to come to the US (through an internal transfer) right now, given that they are aggressively trying to expand here?

If you're at Nomura London, why the hell would you want to come here? Nomura's a tier 3 bank here. With Barclays on your resume at least you won't have trouble getting interviews in NYC for full-time.

I don't disagree with that. I'm just saying (speculating) that say he wanted to move to the US, specifically internally within a bank- would being at Nomura (which is expanding aggressively here) make it easier to to transfer internally to the US, or is it roughly the same difficulty/ease at most banks?

LOL nomura has no dealflow in the US. you seriously need to stfu and get a clue before you speak.

Dude what is your problem? Pull the stick out of your ass. Your logic makes no sense- get a clue before I speak? You're right, I didn't know the answer to something, which is why I asked a question. I also started the post by saying I didn't disagree with what the poster I replied to said, and at the start of my post made it clear I was speculating about something and asked for clarification...for someone with experience and opinions, you sure are bad at reading/good at ignoring what someone has said.
