Non-Target rising Sophomore looking for advice
I am at a non-target that's still fairly known for NYC recruiting. I have a 3.72 GPA, a Leadership position in an IB club, and a position in my school's investment group, d1 athlete.
I have had two relevant internships and two not. One mm pe in person, one remote ib. The other two were wealth management and treasury. I have also earned a spot in a free, highly comp technical training program; think SEO but without as many direct placements, just everything besides direct connection to banks.
Would it be more beneficial to continue looking for another internship experience or better use that time studying behaviorals, networking, and technicals?
I’m convinced I know you
U prob don’t any advice ?
Super non target ( 1 placements a year) here that broke in: do both! Outwork everyone else if you want to break in as a non target. I had a remote IB internship while I was doing recruitment and studying behaviorals+techs. It sucks and might actually be harder than your internship once you hit the desk but you can’t afford to let up. Put your head down and go for it
Thank you, my school typically has like 1-3 placements a year so we are in a similar boat. Do you have any tips you used to balance that or did you just deal with?
Things that helped me with recruitment and balancing workloads:
Keeping yourself organized. Write out your objectives/goals. Start with the month, then do the week, then do every hour of the day (do this every morning when you wake up or the night before). Having a clear vision of what needs to get done (and when) makes things less overwhelming and easier to follow.
Keep your head clear. Don’t forget to take time to exercise and clear your mind a few times a day (5-10 min walks to keep your eyes and brain fresh). You’re going to be busy and learning constantly so this is important so you retain information.
Keeping perspective. Understand that this is going to be difficult and that you need to give this your all if you want to break in. Don’t take any day for granted, learn something new everyday.
All of these skills are transferable once you hit the desk as well, so what better time than to start now. You got this!
Does your name happen to start with a P
D1 athlete will help a ton here, was in a similar boat when I recruited (Athlete @ Nontarget) and it helped explain a lot. A 3.72 isn’t great, but it is for being D1. Would lean into this for a variety of purposes. I recruited into lower BB, largely because one of the MDs played the same sport and had respect for it.
That being said, focus on networking as top priority once school starts and then technicals.
