Non-Target Student from Asia – Seeking Advice on IB Recruiting & Off-Cycle Opportunities
Hey everyone,
I’m currently a non-target student from Asia studying in the U.S., and I’ve been actively networking and cold emailing professionals to break into investment banking. However, my response rate has been quite low, and even when I do get calls, they often don’t seem to lead anywhere. With the regular recruiting cycle now in full swing, I’m starting to feel a bit discouraged about my chances of securing an offer. I wanted to get your insights on a few key questions:
- Is it still worthwhile to keep pushing for SA 2026 recruiting, or should I focus more on securing an internship at a local/boutique firm this summer? Given my current situation, would having experience at a smaller firm strengthen my profile for next year’s cycle?
- If I don’t land an offer this cycle or for this summer, how can I best position myself for off-cycle opportunities? I’ve seen people on LinkedIn who have done off-cycle internships at MM and even BB firms, but there isn’t much information available on how they secured those roles. What’s the best way to approach this?
- As a foreigner, I’m concerned about the language barrier in a professional setting. While I can communicate well in academic and social settings, I imagine the fast-paced nature of IB, along with industry-specific jargon, could be challenging. Have other international students faced similar issues, and what are the best ways to improve my communication skills for banking?
- Looking further ahead, how is the lateral market these days? I know that this is too far into the future but I’ve heard that it has been extremely tough for the past couple of years. If I end up starting at a boutique firm after graduation, how realistic is it to later move into a larger MM or BB bank?
I’d really appreciate any advice on these points. Thanks in advance for your help!
