Non Target Transfer
Currently a HS senior and will most likely attend Virginia Tech. Obviously it is a non target, so I am looking to transfer to UVA. Preferably to the College of Arts & Sciences at UVA after one year at Tech (need to kill it that one year to be able to transfer that soon). From there, I would apply to the McIntire School of Business at UVA during the third year. However, if I do not get into the CAS at UVA for the second year, I would need to spend two years at VT, and then apply directly to the MSB at UVA. With all this said, how harmful will it be losing 1-2 potential years at a non target school? I am interest in working at a BB for IB. I know the internships come second year, so I feel it is extremely important I only spend the first year at VT, and am at UVA during the second year. If not, I could extend graduation a semester so that I could catch up on recruiting. Thoughts & advice? Thank you.
You may as well save the money and go to community college for a year if you're dead set on transferring. Or, you could see if VTech has a selective IB program like many other non-targets. Utilize the alumni network. There has to be at least a few bankers from VTech on the street, it's a decent school. Also, do you have any other options besides VTech?
Yes, I’m also waiting to year back from college of W&M and Georgetown. Gtown is a slight reach for me, and W&M is still 50-50, so I don’t want to get too excited about either school. However, if I do manage to get into W&M, it’s better than VT, but I would still transfer to UVA. On the other hand, Gtown is already a target school so I would be fine there. My reasoning to go to VT vs a CC is that I would at least have more opportunities that year to network (my CC is in a very small town where First Bank and ATMs are the biggest banks) given that VT has two Investment clubs/programs that handle portfolios. I would also have access to reach out to alumni as you said, so I could start building my resume before I transfer.
What's the question here? Your plan seems solid. I'd network my ass off for a boutique IB for the summer after freshman year to get that edge, but any relevant experience will be fine for your first year (try to get into one of the investment funds at VT while you're there).
Just an FYI, if you do not get into UVA as a 2nd year transfer (come in for your 2nd year) I would be cautious about applying to McIntire after two years at tech. You MUST have ALL of their prerequisites complete with satisfactory grades. That means 4 semesters of college level foreign language & a 3.7+ GPA to even be competitive. Comm school gets around 300 applicants per year for transfer, of which they accept 25-32. About 1/3 of those are OOS so realistically you're fighting for one of ~20 spots. Don't sweat too hard though, they ding like 70% of their transfer apps because of people who apply missing even just one prerequisite.
As someone that was in similar shoes as yours, I would recommend keeping your plan but changing your backup to applying to CAS Econ instead of McIntire. The greatest benefit being at UVA is the network and on grounds recruiting. It's not as important as it used to be at UVA if you're in the b-school or not anymore. Since recruiting is moved up, it now happens before kids start at McIntire. Honestly, recruiting happens before kids even get their decisions from McIntire nowadays-- so it's less relevant.
Go for UVA no matter what, your worst case scenario is you transfer into CAS and delay graduation to get a shot at recruiting, with some great experiences under your belt as a transfer student. I promise you that your opportunities in finance/on wall st at UVA are a hundred times stronger than they would be at Tech (still great school but known for STEM not business, congrats btw).
